Lightning Policy

Shennecossett Golf Course considers the safety of our golfers a top priority during inclement weather.

If there is a risk of lightning, play MUST be discontinued. Shennecossett Golf Course is not responsible for the safety of any golfer on the course, and it is therefore your responsibility to remove yourself from any situation which you deem dangerous.

If you see lightning, hear thunder the following will apply:

• Proceed immediately to the clubhouse. Do not continue to play golf and do not seek shelter under trees. Trees do not protect you from lightning.

• During outings, if there is a lightning risk, play will be suspended, and players must leave the course at once.

• Players should stop play and seek shelter any time they believe lightning threatens them.

Although Shenecossett will take reasonable precaution to ensure the safety of players during a thunderstorm, it is a player’s own responsibility to discontinue play and seek shelter when in his/her opinion lightning is a threat. It is not possible for Shenecossett always to monitor conditions on the entire course and players have the duty of care to themselves. They should therefore familiarize themselves with Shennecossett’s policy.

Resumption of Play –

When play has been suspended due to lightning, play must be resumed where it was discontinued. When the risk of lightning has diminished, golfers will be notified by pro-shop staff, that they may return to the course.

We insist that all golfers adhere to the lightning policy. Failure to do so is at your own risk and Shennecossett accepts no liability to any golfer who fails to take reasonable care or fails to cooperate with any decision to suspend play and close the course. It is not the responsibility of staff to retrieve clubs, equipment or pull carts from the course during a lightning storm where play has been suspended, as their safety may be jeopardized.

Please note that gas golf carts do NOT give protection from lightning. LIGHTNING IS A SEVERE HAZARD THAT MUST BE VIEWED SERIOUSLY.

All golfers, guests, and visitors are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful, courteous, and sportsmanlike manner while on Town of Groton golf course property. Respectful treatment of the golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse, Pro Shop, and all employees, including Town of Groton and Par 4 Management staff, is required at all times. Abusive, threatening, harassing, discriminatory, or disruptive behavior, as well as damage to course property or equipment, will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the property, suspension or revocation of playing privileges, and/or additional action as determined by golf course management. Failure to comply may result in removal from the course or suspension of playing privileges.
