Course History
A Donald Ross Legacy on the Connecticut Coast
Founded in 1898, Shennecossett Golf Course is one of Connecticut’s oldest and most historic golf courses. What began as a modest four-hole layout gradually expanded into the eighteen-hole course golfers enjoy today. In 1916, legendary golf course architect Donald Ross redesigned the course, later returning in 1919 to refine portions of the layout and complete his vision. Today, Shennecossett remains one of only five Donald Ross-designed golf courses in Connecticut and the only public Donald Ross course in the state.
The name “Shennecossett” comes from the Pequot Tribe and means “Level Land.” Located in Groton, the course sits on land historically connected to the Pequot and Mohegan Tribes, adding another layer of significance to its rich history.

Scenic Views & Championship Legacy

Known for its scenic coastal setting, Shennecossett offers sweeping views of the Thames River and Long Island Sound, particularly along the signature 16th and 17th holes. Golfers may even spot the U.S.C.G.C. Eagle or submarines navigating the nearby waterways during their round.
Over the years, Shennecossett has welcomed many of golf’s most notable names, including Arnold Palmer, Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, and Francis Ouimet. The course continues to host premier events such as the Connecticut Senior Open while earning recognition as one of the region’s top public golf destinations.
